Sydney began to form her philosophy of design, art, antiques and color at a very young age, always interested in the way shades and variations changed the environment. At age twelve she worked with a local designer Tommy Harris, who became her mentor, to assist in the re-design of her family home. She spent nearly a year studying impressionist artists after school and traveled extensively with her parents whose love was to visit good antique shops during their travels. When she was seventeen she spent a period of time in Europe and that experience left her with a new understanding of scale, geometry, open space, gardens and an historic perspective of architecture.
Sydney began her formal design career in 1971 when she opened Sydney Murphy Antiques and Interiors. Under the tutledge of Tommy Harris who studied in New york, Paris and Milan during his lifetime she began to explore the world of design and all that it entails; color, shape, art, flow, space and furniture antique and modern; in short, all the things that make a home.
In 1985 she opened Sydney Murphy Design in El Dorado, AR and has been in that location since that time. She opened her first decorative design store that year and continued to do interior design.
In a career that has spanned forty plus years she has done residential and commercial design in a variety of locales including not only her home state of Arkansas but also Georgetown, DC, Vail, Colorado, Charleston, SC, Pebble Beach, CA, Providenciales, Turks and Caicos and private yachts in Florida. She is quick to tell her clients that her first job is to listen to their dreams for their home and then begin to help find the things that bring that dream to life. Her experience, taste and her discerning eye have helped hundreds of people create a unique environment for themselves.
